Abstract
This article critically examines how selected African theologians
theorise on the concept of ‘community’ in the African
context through their writings and oral discussions. It
argues that uncritical theorisation on African community
can be a catalyst to xenophobic conflict and a hindrance to
real healing and reconciliation in Africa. African theologians
have an ethical responsibility to purify and expand the
understanding of ‘community’ to include the nation, and ultimately
the community of nations. The article also makes
a brief reference to Nigeria to further illustrate the various
contexts of conflict.
