Strategic alliances have become a pivotal strategy for gaining a competitive advantage, as organizations seek to reduce operational costs and enhance their capabilities to outperform rivals. While previous studies have predominantly examined the performance outcomes of strategic alliances, the concept of competitive advantage has gained importance in today's business environment. This is because a company's success is now evaluated not only based on its current performance but also on the sustainability of that performance. This study aimed at establishing how strategic alliances influence the competitive advantage of commercial banks in Kenya. Specifically, it investigated the effects of knowledge sharing, resource complementarity, brand alliances, and technological collaborations on the competitive positioning of banks. The research utilized resource-based theory, resource dependence theory, and knowledge-based theories to interpret the variables involved. The study targeted all 10 Tier-1 banks in Kenya registered under the Central Bank of Kenya, which included both domestic and foreign banks. A census approach was employed since the population was small, and three middle-level management representatives from each bank were selected based on their involvement in strategic alliance management and decision-making processes, resulting in a sample size of 30 respondents. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and secondary data from annual reports. Descriptive statistics such as means, frequencies, and standard deviations were used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analyses helped determine the relationships between strategic alliances and competitive advantage. The findings highlighted that strategic alliances significantly enhanced the competitive advantage of Kenyan commercial banks. Knowledge sharing emerged as a key driver, allowing banks to leverage external expertise for innovation and improved customer service. Resource complementarity was crucial for pooling strengths and creating synergies, with Standard Chartered Bank leading in this aspect. Brand alliances were essential for improving market credibility and customer trust, while technological collaborations proved transformative, particularly in advancing digital innovation and operational efficiency. The study recommended that banks should focus on cultivating a culture of knowledge sharing within their alliances, invest in robust alliance management capabilities, and regularly evaluate the strategic fit and performance of their alliances to align with business objectives.en_US
