Abstract
The growing threat of global terrorism is an outcome of radicalization to violent extremism. It has prompted most governments and stakeholders across the world to adopt various strategies to mitigate the vice. This study explored mothers’ role in curbing radicalization for Christian-Muslim co-existence in Eastleigh, Nairobi County, Kenya. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of poverty, discrimination, historical injustices and combat on radicalization to violent extremism. To achieve these objectives, the study used both primary and secondary data. Primary data was obtained using questionnaires and interview guides while secondary data was obtained from written texts and electronic media. Both were subjected to critical textual analysis and interpretation to establish their accuracy and suitability for the study. Both primary and secondary data were analyzed thematically according to the objectives. The study found out that radicalization to violent extremism led to acts of terrorism. It revealed that Muslim mothers are not only highly regarded in Islam, but are also more respected in the society and could be engaged to curb radicalization for peaceful co-existence between Christians and Muslims in Eastleigh. The study therefore recommends that mothers should be put at the frontline in terms of resources and education on radicalization and counter-radicalization for they are in a better position to curb it in their capacity as mothers.
