THE ROLE OF PEEPOO TOWARDS YOUTH ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT A CASE STUDY OF SILANGA, KIBERA SLUM.

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to understand the role of peepoo towards to the youth economic empowerment of the youth in Silanga area, Kibera Slum. The study sought to examine whether peepoo contributes to the economic empowerment of the youth in Silanga, Kibera slum, establish the economic sustainability of the youth through use of peepoo in Silanga area, Kibera Slum and determine the economic impact of peepoo in environmental protection of Silanga area, Kibera Slum. This study was carried out in Silanga area, Kibera slum. The study utilized descriptive research design and the target population was the residents of Silanga who are involved with peepoo. The study used stratified random sampling to select the sample size. One hundred and twenty respondents were sampled from a population of four hundred beneficiaries who are over 18 years old. The researcher carried out a pilot study to establish the reliability and validity of the data. Questionnaires were distributed to and collected from the respondents in Silanga area. Qualitative data was analyzed through descriptive statistics while MS Excel was used to help the researcher carry out the analysis of the study and the data was later presented using tables and charts. The study found out that peepoo has contributed to the economic empowerment of the youth, however some of the respondents felt that the amount being paid to them is not enough to cater for their needs. The respondents strongly agreed that the peepoo project has contributed to lasting benefits in Silanga area because of the basic sanitation, safe drinking water that were initially an issue in this area. The study concluded that the peepoo project had a significant impact on the youths of Silanga; consequently, the resilience of the youth to be empowered economically has contributed to the benefit of the participants from the project. The study recommended that it is crucial for the project to lobby the government to support the project, which can facilitate the expansion of the operating area of the project. It also recommended that, apart from training the youth, provision of loan facilities can contribute to their economic empowerment.
