Abstract
There is evidence that executive and leadership turnover hinders productivity in a
number of ways and anyone who has been working with a company long enough to
make it to a position of power gains certain knowledge of the company’s goals.
Things generally work thus this knowledge is important, introducing a new leader to
the position necessitates bringing that person up to speed. Over the last twelve years
LIFE Ministry Kenya has experienced frequent leadership turnover, it has had six
different National Directors within a span of less than three years each. This study
examined the effects of Leadership Turn-Over on Performance of the LIFE Ministry
Kenya. The study was guided by the following objectives; to identify how the
incidence of high leadership turnover in LIFE Ministry Kenya was managed, to
identify the role of the board of directors during leadership turnover and how it
affects organizational performance and to establish how communication affects
organizational performance during leadership turnover. The study employed
descriptive design. Stratified and simple random sampling techniques were adopted
to select the sample. The study grouped the target population into relatively
homogeneous sub-groups then random sampling was applied within each stratum.
The data was collected using the questionnaire and analyzed using mean, standard
deviation, percentages and frequency distributions. The study found out that boards
of directors ensured that a plan for leadership turnover was put in place, there was
proper planning for leadership change at the LIFE Ministry, LIFE Ministry Kenya
had open meetings which are transparent two-way communication hence sustaining
productivity and the organization identifies, evaluates and implements the chosen
strategies. The study concludes that successful leadership turnover preserves the
organization its stakeholders to grow and adapt to new challenges with imagination
and enthusiasm, governing system of LIFE Ministry Kenya help management to
remain stable and objective during a leadership turnover and that communication
plays a major role in leadership turnover. The study recommends that the board
leadership should be well informed about best practices in leadership succession to
be able to devote a significant amount of time to the process and create a positive
environment for the new leaders.
