Dialogue af Experience as a Tool in Christian-Muslim Relations for Peaceful Co-Existence in Makueni County, Kenya

Abstract

Christianity and Islam are missionary religions. In history christains and muslims have had times of rivalry and times of peaceful co existence depending on place and circumstances. In Kenya historically Christians and muslims have had their times of friction as well. This study sought to study why the Christians and Muslims in Makueni County have peacefully coexisted since the establishment of these faiths and have copied each others behaviour bringing forth dialogue of experience. They have shared religious, economic, cultural and social practices at the expense of peace. Despite of religious diversity, they have unrestricted awareness of oneself and ones act. The study was informed by Meads Theory Interactionist Theory. It employed ethnographic study design which necessitated an analysis of dialogue of experience between Christians and Muslims. The focus was more selected major towns within Makueni county but specifically along Mombasa Road. Qualitative and quantitative data was presented and analysed thematically which was obtained through Questionnaires, Interviews, Focused group discussions and Observation by use of NVIVO software . The study aimed at analysing the marks of Dialogue of Experience through economic, religious, cultural and social factors. This has made it possible for Christians and Muslims to peacefully coexist. The integration of these faiths is key in many of our Contemporary communities today.
