Abstract

Urban Development Program is one of the projects that All Saints Cathedral Church has initiated to empower the poor people living in Kayole. The program was started in 1991 but there is no known research that has been carried out to assess its progress. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of this program and its achievements in improving the well-being to its clientele. The study objectives were; the demographic and socioeconomic status of the poor people, the strategies used by Cathedral, the approach used by Cathedral which is integral mission and the achievements of the Urban Development Program. The secondary data was collected in the literature review, and expounded in the theoretical framework and in the conceptual framework. The total study population was 320 persons who are members of UDP. The key informers were a clergy, a social worker and a community health worker. The sample population drawn was 10% of the total population which is 32 persons plus the key informers which made a total of 32. The study was descriptive in design. The data collection was done through the following techniques; questionnaire, interview schedules, Focus Group Discussions and the observation. The overall findings from the study show that integral mission approach used by Urban Development Program was successful. This is because based on the results; poverty was reduced to a larger extent. This is evident in spiritual, social, political and in financial dimension. The study recommends that more churches should embrace this approach as they do community development.
