This study explored the effect of emoji use on workplace communication among university employees in Machakos County, focusing on message tone and clarity, cultural influences, and perceived communication effectiveness. The research adopted a quantitative approach using a descriptive survey design. The target population comprised 198 academic and administrative employees from Machakos University and Scott Christian University, from which a stratified random sample of 132 participants was selected. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, and frequencies), while a regression model assessed the impact of emoji use on communication effectiveness. Findings revealed that employees use emojis moderately, with most reporting that they enhance clarity, convey emotions, and foster engagement, though concerns about professionalism in formal communication were noted. Cultural differences were found to influence emoji interpretation and usage, highlighting their role in inclusivity and context-dependent communication. Results from the regression analysis indicated that emoji use, message tone, clarity, and cultural and contextual factors explained 49.2% of the variation in perceived message quality. Of these factors, message tone had the strongest predictive effect. Generally, the results demonstrate that emojis had an impact on the tone, clarity, and emotion of the message, highlighting the value of the emoji as a nonverbal indicator in a digital medium. The study’s findings suggest that while the use of emojis is generally advantageous in an informal context at the workplace, care should be exercised to ensure professionalism, as with most aspects of professional life. It also suggests universities ought to develop guidelines and policies on emoji usage. Further, universities should encourage effective, culturally sensitive emoji use and provide training that discourages over-reliance on emojis.
